When the South Norfolk Jordan Bridge opens in 2012, it will once again serve as a vital transportation link across the Elizabeth River. But more importantly, this new bridge has the potential to transform communities on both sides of the water, and give citizens in Chesapeake and Portsmouth alike new opportunities to grow and prosper.
In anticipation of the Bridge’s Grand Opening in July, a new Bridge Benefits program is in development! The Bridge Benefits program will reward South Norfolk Jordan Bridge users with perks, discounts and special offers from area retailers, restaurants, attractions and more. The new South Norfolk Jordan Bridge will offer a convenient, alternative way to cross the Elizabeth River. Modern in both engineering and design, it will replace the existing Jordan Bridge that was closed in November 2008.
The new 5,375-foot-long bridge will feature two 12-foot-wide traffic lanes, two 8-foot-wide shoulders and an 8-foot-wide pedestrian sidewalk. The pedestrian sidewalk will be separated from traffic by a concrete barrier.
The high-level, fixed-span bridge will provide improved navigational clearances of 145 feet vertically and 270 feet horizontally. On the west side of the river, the bridge will tie into existing Elm Avenue and provide a roadway tie-in to Burtons Point Road. On the East side, it will tie into the existing Poindexter Street and I-464, and will provide connection roads to Truxton Street.
The new bridge uses no local, state or federal money. It is a private bridge. A fully electronic tolling system will use E-Z Pass to maximize convenience for users.
The South Norfolk Jordan Bridge is scheduled to open by July 2012.
